Mass Translating Your Survey

If you have set up a multi-language survey you can download a mass translate template for each language, translate all of the text in your survey, and upload the translated template. For information on adding a language to your survey see: Creating Multi-Language Surveys.

VIDEO: Mass Translating Your Survey

Step One: Download a Template

Once you have added a language to your survey you will be able to download a mass translation template for it.

To download a template:

  1. Click the settings icon settings icon in the left toolbar.
  2. Click Pages/Messages and then Mass Translate.
  3. To download a template one specific language, select that language from the Translations for language drop down in the upper right corner of the page and click the Download Translation Template button. To download zip file of all language templates, click the Download All Languages button.

Step Two: Translate the Template

The translation template is a .txt file named using a two letter language code, for example, fr.txt is the translation template for French.

Do not rename your file. To successfully upload, the file needs to be named with a two letter language code.

To translate the file:

  1. Open the file with a text editing program.
  2. The template contains an item for every question, button, label, or message in your survey. Each text item in the survey has a msgid and a msgstr. Both fields contain the English text in the survey surround by quotes. Replace the text following msgstr with translated text. Make sure to retain the quotation marks around your translated text. Leave the text following msgid alone. For a full guide of where each label, button, or site message is encountered by respondents see: Editing Page Button Text Errors and Warning Messages
  3. Save your file retaining the original name and file format.

Step Three: Upload the Template

Once you have translated all of the msgstr elements in the file, upload the template. Once the template is uploaded, you can preview your translation by selecting the appropriate language from the language drop down in the upper right corner of the editor or selecting the language in preview mode.

  1. Click the settings icon settings icon in the left toolbar.
  2. Click Pages/Messages and then Mass Translate.
  3. Click Browse next to Translation upload, locate your file, and click Open.
  4. Click Upload. If your upload is successful a message appears saying Translations applied successfully. If you get an error, check to make sure the file you are uploading is correctly named with the two letter language code and is a txt file. If the file is correctly named and formatted, you may have an issue with the formatting of the contents of the file. Make sure that all text elements following the msgstr field are wrapped in quotation marks.
