VIDEO: Group/Rank Question

The Group/Rank question asks respondents to sort a list of items into groups. The question lets you ask respondents both to categorize and rank their choices.

To set up a Group/Rank question:

  1. Drag and drop a Group/Rank question from the Advanced Questions section of the palette to the canvas.
  2. Phrase your question in the Question Title and optionally add an Extra Description.
  3. By default the question has two choices and two groups. Click the + Add button in the Items section to add choices to your list to sort from. You can also use the Bulk option or Extraction to add choices to your list. Choices can be given a Score or Code.
  4. To add more groups to sort into, click the + Add button in the Groups section. Groups may also be added using the Bulk option or Extraction. If you want to exclude a group from random or alphabetic ordering, select Static.
  5. Configure Options and Display settings for the question. See below for details.
  6. Save your survey.

OptionalMakes question optional. Uncheck to make it required.
Randomize VariablesShows groups in a random order per respondent. Use the Static Variable setting to leave one or more group in place.
Alphabetize VariablesShows groups in a alphabetic order. Use the Static Variable setting to leave one or more group in place.


Display side-by-sideDisplays the question on one half of the screen. In order for two questions to display side-by-side, you’ll have to enable this option for both questions. The first question will be on the left and the second on the right.
Append to previous questionUse this to make this question appear as if it’s part of the previous question.
Extra ClassesAdvanced option to define classes for custom javascript or CSS.
Error MessageEdit the error message that is displayed if the question is required and the respondent hasn’t ranked some or all of the items into groups. By default the message is “All {x} choices need to be ranked” (where {x} is replaced with the number of choices in your question).
